M.F.A. Stage Management Degree Requirements

The Master of Fine Arts degree requires 60 credit hours of approved courses with a minimum of a 3.0 (B) grade point average, and you can receive credit working in summer theatre and effectively graduate in 2 1/2 years.

Each academic year, you will be assigned to work on four productions with a mix of Kansas City Rep, Department of Theatre productions and/or co-productions with other professional stages in KC, such as the Unicorn Theatre, the Coterie Theatre and the KC Actors Theatre. Opera and dance stage management projects offer another option, allowing you the opportunity to work as a production assistant or assistant stage manager at the Lyric Opera of Kansas City.

Faculty members are on hand to assist and advise in the selection of internships and residencies. Recent residencies have taken place at Sante Fe Opera, Arkansas Shakespeare Festival, Glimmerglass Festival in New York, Texas Shakespeare Festival, Heart of America Shakespeare Festival, and Des Moines Metro Opera.

In the final semester of training, all Stage Management students are required to present a portfolio to the department’s design and technology faculty members. This rigorous review will display your growth and development through your training and coursework.
