Master of Fine Arts in Acting

Admission Requirements

  • Admission to the UMKC School of Graduate Studies
  • Admission to the Master of Fine Arts in Acting program
  • A Bachelor of Arts degree from a recognized university or college and acceptance by the faculty mentor for the area of admission.  A student having a bachelor’s degree in another discipline may be admitted upon the recommendation of the area head.  A precondition to admission might be a requirement of completion of undergraduate Theatre courses, as determined by the area head.  These courses will not be credited toward the requirements for graduation in the MFA program unless approved in advance by the area head.

URTA Auditions

  • We will not be accepting a new MFA Acting class until Fall 2022. We are a member of the University Resident Theatre Association (URTA) and will be attending auditions in NYC, Chicago and San Francisco in Jan/Feb. 2022. Please visit urta.com for more information on the audition process.

Local Audition Preparation

  • In February, 2022 we will be holding local auditions for our incoming MFA Acting class to begin in Fall 2022. Auditions will consist of:
  • Two contrasting (classical and contemporary) 1.5 to 2-minute monologues
  • OPTIONAL: Sixteen bars of a song performed a cappella or with recorded accompaniment. (a player will be provided)
  • Please check back in Fall 2020 for further information.

Steps for Admission

  • Prior to an offer into the MFA Acting program, the following materials must be received:
  • UMKC application and fee along with official college transcripts to the Office of Admissions.
  • Three letters of recommendation; each with the provided letter of recommendation form.
  • A headshot,  résumé, and statement of purpose, including a two-page essay: page 1) the most memorable moment you’ve had in theatre, and page 2) a defining moment you’ve had in life unrelated to theatre.

Admission Requirements

  • Admission to the designated Master of Fine Arts in Design program

  • Submit a UMKC application and fee along with official college transcripts to the Office of Admissions.
  • Two letters of recommendation are requested, each with the provided letter of recommendation to be sent to the professor in your discipline listed below.
